Construction points
Construction points are one of County of Fortune’s most misunderstood systems. They are not a generic “build currency”; they are a chain of production, maintenance and scarcity. Once you know which type you are short of, the fix is usually obvious.
Three types of points
| Type | Source | Main use | Shortage fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free construction points | Slowly generated; limited pool | Early construction; substitute for carpentry | Wait, or build the real guild chain |
| Carpentry points | Carpenter’s Guild + logs | Buildings, maintenance, wood construction | Expand guild, supply logs, add workers |
| Masonry points | Mason’s Guild + stone | Commoner buildings, stone roads, maintenance | Expand guild, secure stone, upgrade roads selectively |
Free construction points
Free construction points are a limited pool that slowly increases over time. They can replace carpentry points during construction, which makes them valuable in the opening when you do not yet have a carpenter’s guild.
Do not treat them as infinite. Spend them on the buildings that unlock the next chain — a workshop, a guild or a market — rather than on decorative roads. A quality-of-life update allows free points to be applied after construction has started, so you can rescue a stalled project without demolishing it.
Carpentry points
Carpentry points come from a carpenter’s guild processing logs. They are the basic construction currency and are also consumed by maintenance. If your carpenter’s guild is understaffed or starved of logs, every wooden building and road in the region suffers.
- Input: logs from a logging camp.
- Output: carpentry points.
- Bottleneck: guild capacity, worker count, log supply.
- Fix: add a second guild or expand the existing one, add recipes, increase workers with equipment.
Masonry points
Masonry points come from a mason’s guild processing stone. They are required for many Commoner buildings and for stone road maintenance. Stone is heavier and more geographically constrained than wood, which makes masonry the mid-game bottleneck.
If your region has no stone, you need a second region with a quarry and a river route. In the demo, rafts move stone downstream only. In Early Access, ports and sailboats allow both directions. The trade guide walks through the route.
Upgrading every road to stone can drain masonry points and stall construction. Upgrade the routes that carry food and construction goods first; leave low-traffic roads as dirt.
Reading the UI
Construction points are displayed in the top-right bar. The UI greys out the type that is not relevant at a given moment and warns you when either type hits zero. Hover the bar for a detailed tooltip that shows:
- The production chain for that point type.
- Where production is taking place in the region.
- How much of the corresponding construction material is in storage.
This tooltip is the fastest way to diagnose a shortage. If it shows plenty of logs but no carpenter’s guild, build the guild. If it shows a guild but no logs, fix the logging chain.
Fixing shortages
- Identify the type. Free, carpentry or masonry? The top bar tells you.
- Check the input. Logs for carpentry, stone for masonry. Is the input produced? Is it stored? Is it reaching the guild?
- Check the guild. Is it staffed? Is its efficiency low? Does it have spare recipes?
- Reduce demand. Pause non-critical construction, delay road upgrades, or level a settlement down.
- Add capacity. A second guild or more workers may be cheaper than waiting.
Maintenance and roads
Buildings and roads require upkeep. A damaged road shows reduced speed, and the tooltip lists the maintaining settlement and the masonry points consumed per month. A stone road can carry more traffic and move goods faster, but it is not free to keep.
Maintenance is easy to ignore until a supply chain slows down. Check the road tooltip on your main artery after a period of expansion. If the road is damaged, repair or expand the mason’s guild before adding another settlement.
For the guild buildings themselves, see the buildings reference. For the production chains that supply them, read the production guide.
Quick answers
County of Fortune construction point questions
What are construction points in County of Fortune?
They are the resources used to build and maintain infrastructure. There are three kinds: free construction points, carpentry points and masonry points. Free points are a limited early-game substitute; carpentry and masonry points come from guilds and raw materials.
How do I get more carpentry points?
Build or expand a carpenter’s guild and supply it with logs. Adding valid recipes and enough workers increases its efficiency. If construction still stalls, check that the guild has maintenance capacity and that logs are reaching it.
How do I get more masonry points?
Build or expand a mason’s guild and supply it with stone. Masonry points are required for many Commoner buildings and stone road maintenance. Stone access usually means a quarry, or an upstream region trading stone downstream.
Can free construction points be used after building starts?
Yes. A quality-of-life update allows free construction points to be applied at any point during construction, not only when placing the building.
Why is my road damaged?
Roads require maintenance from a mason’s guild. If masonry points are negative or the guild is understaffed, roads degrade and lose speed. Check the road tooltip and the masonry balance in the top bar.
